Who is QMS Audits?

QMS Audits is one of the largest food safety training companies in Australia. We love food safety. Having written up food safety programs for more than 800 clients in the last 10 years, we know what auditors are looking for.

We train more than 1000 students in HACCP and other food safety courses. We have an Auditor Academy where we train up even more students, including Environmental Health Officers and auditors from government regulators.

Ten years ago, we started from a spare bedroom, now we have 11 amazing staff whom we love, as well as rely on the efforts of 15 contract auditors and 2 contract trainers.

Does QMS Audits train up EHOs and Government Regulators?

Yes, it is true!

We train up lots of Food Safety Auditors through our Auditor Academy. Many of our Auditor Academy students are Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) working for local councils around Australia. Some work for the Certification Bodies, such as Aus-Meat and others work for some of the government regulators.

Its the same learnings, same Food Standards Code and same food safety principles (sometimes its even the same slide presentation…shhhhh…but lets not tell them!) So you can rest assured, we have a deep understanding of the food standards code, compliance requirements and what good food safety looks like. Did we mention, we really, really like Food Safety?

Food Safety Supervisor FAQ

If your question has not been answered by the FAQ, don’t worry! QMS Audits has developed a detailed help centre to answer other queries you may have about our Food Safety Supervisor training. Still not finding the answer you are looking for, please contact us on 1300 404 505.
Who is affected by the new 3.2.2A standard?
Most food businesses in Australia are affected by the new Standard, across all states and territories. Specifically, Category 1 and 2 businesses need a Food Safety Supervisor. Category 1 and 2 includes any food retailer, food service or caterer that handles unpackaged potentially hazardous food (PHF) or that processes unpackaged PHF and sells it as ready-to-eat food. Businesses that handle food for or at a fundraising event only are exempt.
What will I learn?

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Handle food in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Understand the key roles and responsibilities of a Food Safety Supervisor within the industry in which your business operates.
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for any food business that needs to have a fully qualified Food Safety Supervisor on the premises by the time the new requirements are introduced. If your business falls under a category 1 or 2 food business, this course is for you.
How is the course structured?

The Food Safety Supervisor courses are fully online and self-paced. This means you have control over your own training and can complete the course at your own pace.

How many Food Safety Supervisors do I need to have on staff?

The wording around regulations for the number of Food Safety Supervisors (FSS) can vary from state to state. New South Wales requires at least one FSS per premise. Victoria does not require a FSS to be on site at all times but they must know food is being handled safely. However, if a FSS is on leave, then another FSS must be available. Leave includes annual leave and maternity leave.

If you only have one FSS but run extended shifts or run 7 days a week, it means that person must be available to take phone calls and be available to clarify food safety requirements even when they are not at work. They are responsible for the food safety of the business, even on the days they are not at work, which can be difficult.

The best way to ensure compliance to the Food Standards Code, is to have at least two food safety supervisors available in small businesses. We recommend you start with your supervisors and managers.

What States in Australia need to have a Food Safety Supervisor?

All states and territories must have a Food Safety Supervisor in their food businesses. Previously, only Victoria, NSW and Queensland were affected by this requirement. This means eligible businesses in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT must have a Food Safety Supervisor on staff.

What Type of food businesses need to have a Food Safety Supervisor?

Standard 3.2.2A applies to food service and closely related retail businesses who are defined as either category 1 or 2 businesses in the Standard. Depending on their activities, general examples include:

  • Restaurants, cafés, pubs, hotels with table service, takeaway and smorgasbords
  • Supermarkets and delis
  • Takeaway shops
  • Mobile food vendors and juice bars
  • Hospitals and hospices
  • Aged care facilities
  • Childcare centres
How often do I have to renew my Food Safety Supervisor Training?

Every five years. All Food Safety Supervisor training must be conducted by a Registered Training Organisation, such as QMS Audits. The training must have been completed within the last five years to be recognised by your local council, NSW Food Authority, Safe Food Queensland or your local regulator.

For Food Safety Supervisors who have conducted their training more than five years ago, the quickest and most straight forward way to get a current certificate is to undergo the training again. This will ensure your knowledge is based on the most up-to-date food safety legislation and techniques.

Can QMS Audits come to our site to deliver training?

Yes! We would love to come to your site to deliver Food Safety Supervisor training.  You will need an area for us to deliver the training and we will charge for travel. Please call our office on 1300 404 505 for a quote or email info@qmsaudits.com.au
