Becoming a Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) is a straight-forward process that starts with enrolling in Food Safety Supervisor Course provided by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The Food Safety Supervisor Course teaches food safety laws, hygiene, and risk management. It ends with the issuing of a Statement of Attainment once the training is completed. The course material can be completed online in as little as six hours with some additional tasks to be completed in the workplace. Anyone can undertake Food Safety Supervisor training as there are no pre-requisites.

Essential Steps for Getting Certified

Enrolling in our Food Safety Supervisor Training is the first step. Anyone can undertake Food Safety Supervisor Training as there are no pre-requisites. The course material can be completed in as little as six hours and is completely online. The course has 18 lessons with quizzes at the end of each lesson that can be completed at your own pace. You will also complete additional tasks through a Supervisor Checklist, which is sent to a nominated supervisor and is completely online – no paper forms needed! The Supervisor Checklist allows you to demonstrate hygienic practices and safe food handling in the workplace.

Once you’ve finished the course and successfully completed the Supervisor Checklist, you will be eligible to receive your Food Safety Supervisor Certificate. This certificate is renewed every 5 years. However, completing a course doesn’t automatically mean you’re qualified. Specific regions like New South Wales (NSW) have additional requirements, which are covered below.

Upskilling: From Food Handler to Food Safety Supervisor

If you’re a food handler who has already completed a Food Handler Course, to further your career, you can enrol in a Food Handler (Level 2) Course, that covers advanced food safety principles, including risk management and regulatory compliance. With these qualifications, you will be well-equipped to take on the responsibilities of a Food Safety Supervisor.

If you have not received a Food Handler (Level 1) qualification, QMS Audits combines Level 1 & 2 in the Food Safety Supervisor course. More information can be found in our article on on food safety supervisor qualifications

Becoming a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW: Specific Requirements

New South Wales has its own regulatory regime for Food Safety Supervisors. The NSW Food Authority recognises training from Registered Training Organisations, including QMS Audits.  These RTOs provide approved Food Safety Supervisor Training for the Hospitality and Retail sectors. If you need an NSW-specific certificate, you can select the NSW Certificate option when enrolling in QMS Audits’ Food Safety Supervisor Course or Food Handler (Level 2) Course.

Once your training is complete, you must have both the Statement of Attainment issued by your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and the NSW Food Authority approved Food Safety Supervisor Certificate. You must notify the NSW Council of your nominated Food Safety Supervisor and provide a copy of their certificate as evidence of their qualifications.
